With your technical background, you were able to really see what was happening in your departments and provide good guidance. I believe that functional managers (competency managers) need to be able to really see and understand what the people they lead are doing and - at least for more junior people - provide effective guidance at appropriate times. With your technical background, you were able to really see what was happening in your departments and provide good guidance.
