Cultural Fit Trumps Competence? Maybe

Did you see Cultural Fit Trumps Competence? I don’t know that cultural fit trumps competence. I know that it’s critically important. For geeks, you need a minimum of technical skills and then cultural fit is critically important.

I do agree with Feld that the more senior you are, the more cultural fit is critical. Why? Because that person has more impact on hiring decisions and will make more hiring decisions than people who are less senior.

For now, I’m going with “needs sufficient technical skills,” and my earlier statements and statements in Hiring Geeks That Fit that geeks find it relatively easy to learn tools and technology. And, that cultural fit is critical, whether you are hiring for a startup or a well-established organization.

Because we don’t fire based on technical skills. How many times have you wanted to fire people because they couldn’t do the job? Not too often. But how many times have you wanted to fire people because they didn’t fit? Way more times. We fire based on cultural fit. It is that simple.

  1. I think in cultures that value continuous learning, which is probably a necessary value in any reasonably adaptive organization, “needs sufficient technical skills” isn’t an absolute truism.

    • Ah, and valuing continuous learning is part of cultural fit. Good catch, Derek.
