Too Simple a Definition of a Project
Via Raven's Think you know what a project is?, there's a pointer to What is a Project? Think Again!. Garry, the author likes David Allen's definition of a project:
A project is any outcome you’re committed to achieving that will take more than one action step to complete.
I don't disagree with that on a personal level. But I don't think that's enough for a project manager inside an organization. I prefer Max Wideman's version:
A novel undertaking or systematic process to create a new product or service, the delivery of which signals completion. Projects involve risk and are typically constrained by limited resources.
That leads me to my definition of a project manager:
The person whose job it is to articulate and communicate what done means and to guide the project team to done. By done, I mean a product that meets the needs of the organization developing the product and the customers who will use the product.
