The Transcript:

I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is 60 Seconds of Johanna’s Writing WIP for April 12, 2024, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.

This excerpt is from the speaking book.

This chapter focused on a future vision based on your personal expertise and experience. Sometimes, you might offer an example of what actually occurred at a specific organization. That's called an experience report, a case study, or a lessons learned report.

Experience reports tell two stories: the first is of the problems a specific organization encountered and what they did to solve those problems. The second story is how the reporter–you, the speaker–changed as you worked with the organization.

Regardless of what your conference calls these types of talks, consider the frame of “experience report.” That name helps me, as a speaker, remember to include both perspectives: the organization and the speaker. And, it helps the audience realize that their problems might not be exactly the same, but they might learn from your experience.
