I'm running a Kickstarter for the Effective Public Speaking book. It funded on the first day thanks to all my backers! I am thrilled. Now, I get to think about stretch goals, and finishing the audiobooks, the bookplate stickers, and all that finishing work.
Why a Kickstarter? Several reasons:
- Experiment with new forms of marketing.
- Invite more people to my email list(s). Kickstarter shows my campaign to people who do not know me yet.
- See if I could really do something that was image-first, text-second. (Talk about kicking my creative butt. This really challenged me.)
I knew that Kickstarter worked for fiction. I have backed many fiction Kickstarters. But nonfiction? The hook (what Kickstarter calls this a Story) for fiction is not the same as the hook for nonfiction. Especially since I wanted to sell three books.
Too many writers and consultants love doing the work. That is, they love the writing and working with their clients. But marketing themselves? That's a problem.
My three books in this Kickstarter: Effective Public Speaking, Write a Conference Proposal, and Successful Independent Consulting all focus on content marketing. That's the way writers and consultants do the work they love and maintain their successful businesses.
Funding is just the first step. (And I am thrilled about that.) The more people who fund this Kickstarter, the more stretch goals I can add. I'm excited. Please back the Kickstarter.
