Differentiate Between Simulations and Games
While some people call all simulations games, I differentiate between the two. Simulations allow participants to practice a specific aspect of the work safely. Simulations mimic the work people will do. For example, I've asked participants to think about their projects and then rank the drivers, boundaries, and constraints. Then, we discuss it. There is no right or wrong answer, just what the participants think.
Games tend to focus on fun. That's not wrong–but it's not always easy to see the connection between the game and what participants need to do at work. If you do use a game, be explicit about how to connect what people do in the game with what they will need to do at work.
Make your presentations engaging, by challenging people to think as they have fun. Avoid focusing on the fun first.
