I help you identify and solve the problems that prevent you from releasing systems, hiring the right people, deciding which project to work on next. I take a pragmatic approach: what will work best for you, now? Some people call me a focuser. Some call me an accelerator. When I work with people, first we define our goal together. Typically, it's to get a better product out the door faster. I work with my clients to help managers figure out how to do the managing better, and how the technical contributors can contribute better, not to create a by-the-book system. I work with you, your staff, and your current product development practices. Together, we learn what works well for you and what doesn't. I believe in changing only what needs to be changed at the current time, to maximize your success. We work together to develop a blueprint for the future, and to build in capacity to recognize and implement change.

PragPub Out With an Article From Me

I wrote a little article about Barriers to Agility in the most recent version of PragPub, the online magazine from the Pragmatic Bookshelf. There’s a bunch of other good articles in there, too. Andy Lester has a great article about speaking as a way to practice interviewing, a bunch of comments/thoughts/rants about the iPad, and

Trip Report for Japan Symposium on Software Testing

I just returned from Tokyo, where I keynoted at JaSST, the Japan Symposium on Software Testing. 10 years ago, when they started the conference, maybe it was just about testing, but now it’s evolved to be about quality in the organization. Some highlights from my trip: Everyone (and everything) I met appeared quite orderly. Everything

Authenticity Works for Interviews

I read a lot about speakers practicing authenticity. (Huh?) All the suggestions seem reasonable, yet contrived to me: act interested in your audience, use your current location in your speech, remember to thank people at the end of your speech. If you don’t want to be a speaker, don’t. If you do want to be

Still Time to Reserve Your Spot for "3 Crucial Factors…"

Wow! I can hardly believe how many people have signed up for the brand-new free teleclass, “3 Crucial Factors For Preventing Your Agile Titanic” that Gil Broza and I will be teaching next week! I guess we struck a nerve with many people who want (or need) to get Agile going, and who don’t have

Prevent Your Agile Titanic

I have a question for you:  Have you come across team whose first attempt at Agile adoption resulted in conflicts, pain, or just fell short of expectations? I’ve met plenty of teams like that. I’ve heard statements like “nobody knew what they were doing”, “management still dictated an impossible deadline” and “those sprints became small

Creativity Flows in Person

I’m back from our AYE conference planning. I had a blast. The best thing, aside from being able to publish our program, is that we discovered that when we are together, the creative juices fly. For example, instead of two people pairing to teach the warm-up tutorial, we decided we all teach the tutorial. Not

Good Interviews Are Conversations

I was reading, Nervous about an interview? Try this! and thought, hmm, I’ve said something like that before, haven’t I? I have, but in slides (for my Hiring for an Agile Team tutorial and workshop and in my other workshops) and in person, but not on this blog. So, let me say it here: Good
