Public Speaking Myth 3: Exposure is Enough Compensation for the Value You Offer

Effective Public SpeakingCover-300There is another pernicious myth about public speaking: that exposure is enough compensation. That myth ignores the value the speaker offers.

Imagine this scenario: a large, multinational company or a famous conference asks you to speak. You feel flattered and warm all over. You have exactly the right presentation for their audience.

Then you ask: “How much is the honorarium?”

They say, “Oh, we don’t pay speakers. We offer exposure.”

People die of exposure.

Remember, this company or conference is asking you to invest in them. Why would you offer your pearls of wisdom to people who do not value you?

Please back my Kickstarter for the Effective Public Speaking book. I'm thrilled we have met one stretch goal. That is a Zoom call with me after the Kickstarter finishes. Yes, I will announce more stretch goals today.
